Texas Senate District 13

Why Me? Why Now?

I never intended to get into politics. I have always considered myself a friend, an advocate, a socially active free spirit who espouses a "live and let live" personal constitution. At every outrage, every injustice, every bit of hate and intolerance, I was satisfied expressing my dissent on social media and fighting against the social ills that affect my circle of concern. I've grown dissatisfied now that I realize how fighting the abuse of power, privilege, racism and sexism one affected person at a time is ineffective since those ills are, by design, harmful to whole groups of people. Having had invitations into the lives of so many people, I understand that our circles of concern are huge and overlapping and the only way to combat these issues is to do so as a movement.

Our voice must not only be heard but understood, our lives should not only matter but valued, and the laws should reflect the values of the electorate, Lastly, the power that some of our elected officials abuse is the power that belongs to the people. Why District 13 should choose me is because, if given the opportunity, I will choose District 13, not my own personal interests or that of the folks who believe that a good quality of life is reserved for the privileged few.

Originally from Arkansas, I have been in Houston and surrounding area since 1995. It was here in District 13, then a 21 year old Prairie View graduate, began my journey to fulfill my Dad's 15 year old directive of becoming a lawyer. In 2006, after graduation, I immediately started my practice with two of my classmates and set out to change the world. As is life, the magic of the practice of law is mired down in the systemic racism, partisan politics in the judiciary, poverty and abuse of power.

In last year's election, I got excited again. The country, particularly Harris County, is just as discouraged and outraged. Maybe not at all the same issues, but each of us has issues that are not being addressed by our government. Local, state and nationwide governments are not in step with the people they purport to represent. In 2020, we have a chance to choose the candidate who will choose us back.
